Is It Possible To Be Allergic To Electricity?

People who are allergic to electricity suffer from discomfort when exposed to electromagnetic fields. However, science has not yet established whether it can be classified as an allergy or another similar condition.
Is it possible to be allergic to electricity?

Being allergic to electricity is a topic that experts do not talk much about. Although there are many reports dealing with this condition, it does not currently have a solid, scientific basis. Furthermore, the formal diagnosis of this disorder is not recognized.

If someone is allergic to electricity, it means that  they are suffering from an adverse response involving visible symptoms when exposed to electromagnetic fields. They range from eye discomfort to more serious problems.

This condition is also known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). Science has not reached a consensus on this issue, as there is conflicting evidence in the case.

What is electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS)?

Being allergic to electricity or suffering from electromagnetic hypersensitivity is an intolerance to electromagnetic fields. If someone with this condition exposes themselves to them, they will suffer from a range of symptoms that largely coincide with those caused by allergies.

Electromagnetic fields are classical fields (that is, non-quantity) produced by the acceleration of electric charges from wires, telephones, household appliances and high-voltage Wi-Fi networks. In theory, people who are allergic to electricity will suffer from physical or mental discomfort if they are exposed to these fields,

There is no scientific support for the existence of this condition. Some studies have shown that people who feel affected by this problem show symptoms when exposed to both real and false electromagnetic fields.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has released a report  on the disorder in 2015. It highlighted that there is no evidence for people with allergies to electricity or that electromagnetic hypersensitivity exists. However, it also claims that further studies are needed.

Allergic to electricity – the symptoms

Many doctors and researchers believe that the precautionary principle should be applied in these cases. This principle states that it is best to accept the existence of the problem and act accordingly when faced with a situation where there is no definitive evidence.

According to available and unsubstantiated data, electromagnetic hypersensitivity causes  chronic fatigue, recurrent headache, dizziness, nervousness, tachycardia, decreased concentration, insomnia and other similar symptoms.

Likewise, the symptoms in those who appear to be allergic to electricity consist of three stages:

  • First stage. This is basically neurological in nature. Among other things, it causes symptoms such as headaches, ringing in the ears,  numbness and buzzing, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, digestive problems and tachycardia.
  • Second stage. This stage causes three symptoms: Chronic fatigue, insomnia and depression. Irritability, verbal aggression and mood disorders can also occur.
  • Third stage. Children suffer from hyperactivity and loss of interest in play and schoolwork. Teenagers may suffer from mental changes and behavioral changes. Adults suffer from delirium and pseudodemesis.

An important aspect to consider is that the symptoms get worse when patients are exposed to electromagnetic fields, but decrease if they become limited. This condition occurs and gradually gets worse. It has greater psychological effects in children, while it has more neurodegenerative effects in adults.

Is there a treatment for electromagnetic hypersensitivity?

Since electromagnetic hypersensitivity is not a recognized medical diagnosis, there is no treatment for it either. Experts who admit the fact that people may be allergic to electricity point out that it may be due to  a weak immune system or a particular vulnerability to electromagnetism.

Some reports indicate that this condition is gradually getting worse. Because of this, experts recommend changing some habits. For example, it could be the following:

  • Ventilate the house 15 minutes a day.
  • Replace wifi networks with wired connections.
  • Replace cordless phones with landlines.
  • Hire a specialist to find the primary sources of radiation in the home. This will allow changes to be made to reduce the exposure of the affected person.
  • Dress in clothes made of natural fibers such as cotton and wool. Synthetic materials promote static electricity. Therefore, experts advise against using this.
  • Only use the mobile phone for essential tasks. Use it in open areas and use the speaker so you do not have to bring the phone up to your head.
  • Remove electrical appliances or similar appliances from the bedroom. It is best to unplug them when not in use.

Ultimately, those who are allergic to electricity should expose themselves as little as possible to electromagnetic fields. That way  , it is possible for the symptoms to subside instead of getting worse.

Final recommendations if you are allergic to electricity

Nowadays, there are electromagnetic fields everywhere. Electrical or electronic devices are not the only sources. These fields are actually all over us. The earth has its own magnetic field. Likewise, the radiation that the sun emits every day is much higher than the amount that any cell phone antenna emits.

In view of all the above, it is practically impossible to create areas that are free of electromagnetic radiation. If nothing else, the healthiest thing to unplug from electronic devices from time to time – whether this allergy exists or not. You can take advantage of this time to enjoy nature.
